Cultural Context

What were the performance conventions in Sophocles’ time?

In Sophocles time period, traditional plays would only have a cast of three actors and the chours. These three actors would change roles thought the play.  Ceremony's were also carried out before each preformace. The tradition was to  pour wine on to the stage as an offering to Dionysus, the greek god of theatre. They then carried the money donated by the sponsors of the theatre across the stage, to show their appreciation and respect. Then names of the city patrons were then read out, these people would probably be sitting in the front row Lastly, the orphans of the men who had died at war would be brought out and it would be declared that the city would look after and take on the guardianship of these kids. The children would also be clothed in their fathers amour, showing their preparation to fight for the city.

What were the trends or fashions within the performing arts?

A Greek Mask
The three main trending plays were comedies, satyrs or tragedies. The technology used in greek plays wasn't very advanced. Trap doors and props were as far as it went in the technology department. Natural light was their only source of light as artificial light wasn't used, sound effects were produced by the actors or by instruments. Violence or gore was never shown on stage so their was no need to develop realistic special effects to show wounds or blood. Costumes were made to ensure audience members at the back of the amphitheatre could see and hear everything that happened on stage. The masks were shaped in a certain (the mouth was in a funnel-like shape) way that enabled the sounds to travel further, the costumes also had a lot of bright colours so it was easier for the people at the back to visualise and identify each character.
